Cheviot Futures

The Cheviot Futures initiative committed to provide practical real-world solutions to the challenges our communities face due to the effects of climate change. The project was a cooperative of representatives from agencies and organisations involved in working with the rural communities of north Northumberland (English Heritage, Environment Agency, Forestry Commission England, Ministry of Defence, Natural England, Northumberland National Park, RSPB).

The focus of Cheviot Futures Illustration was to show land management adaptation and mitigation against the impacts of climate change across the Cheviot Hills landscape. The main impact areas of climate change include an increase in extreme weather (including enhanced flood risk), altered seasonality of rainfall leading to more problems associated with drought in summer (including wildfire risk to sensitive habitat types) and waterlogging in winter.

The poster provided an impactful way to engage with multiple stakeholders whilst providing a broad range of solutions to mitigate the effects of the changing climate. The poster was adapted to other projects and led to further illustrative comissions for adaptions to land management.
